Series Summary Tab

Overview

The Series Summary tab is a multi-scenario batch comparison tool built into Apollo. It reads the Summary.csv output file from each scenario subfolder in a directory you choose and aggregates key simulation results into side-by-side comparison tables.

Series Summary lets you review multiple iPool simulation results from one screen without loading each scenario individually into the Dashboard.

The tool supports comparison of:

  • Pool Data — overall system performance
  • Zonal Data — performance by zone
  • Regional Data — performance by region
  • Fuel Type Data — aggregated results by generation technology
  • Portfolio Data — performance by portfolio grouping
  • Storage Data — performance by storage unit

Each selected data type or sub-item produces a comparison table. Scenarios appear as rows, while the available summary metrics appear as columns.

The Series Summary tool is independent of the scenario currently selected in the Dashboard's Objects tree. Selecting a different scenario in the tree does not change the directory used by Series Summary.

Series Summary vs. Summary Viewer

The two viewers serve different purposes:

The standard Summary Viewer is a table-based Dashboard viewer. Series Summary is intended specifically for comparing a series of simulation results.

How Series Summary works

Series Summary follows this general workflow:

  1. Select a parent directory containing scenario subfolders.
  2. Apollo scans the available scenario folders.
  3. Apollo discovers the available zones, regions, fuel types, portfolios, and storage units.
  4. Select the data types you want to compare.
  5. Select the individual items within those data types.
  6. Click Analyze.
  7. Apollo reads the available Summary.csv files and generates comparison tables.
  8. Review, sort, show or hide columns, and export individual tables as needed.

The tool reads the scenario summary output files directly from the selected directory.


What It Is Used For

Use Series Summary to compare completed iPool simulation runs and evaluate how their results differ.

Typical uses include:

  • Comparing a base scenario against alternative scenarios.
  • Comparing overall Pool performance.
  • Comparing specific zones across scenarios.
  • Comparing individual regions.
  • Comparing generation results by fuel type.
  • Comparing portfolio performance.
  • Comparing storage-unit performance.
  • Reviewing price and energy results across scenarios.
  • Reviewing operational metrics across scenarios.
  • Reviewing cost, revenue, and profit results.
  • Identifying the scenario with the highest or lowest value for a selected metric.
  • Sorting scenarios by an important metric.
  • Exporting comparison tables for further analysis.

Series Summary is particularly useful when you have generated a batch of iPool simulation scenarios and want to evaluate them together rather than opening and reviewing each scenario separately.

Comparison Data Types

Series Summary supports six major data types:

The exact metric columns available depend on the contents of the scenario Summary.csv files.


Analysis Results

After you run the analysis, Apollo displays the results under the Analysis Results heading.

The tables depend on the data types and individual items that you select.

Pool Data

Pool Data compares overall system-level results across scenarios.

Pool Data is selected by default.

The Pool table contains:

  • one row per scenario;
  • summary metrics as columns;
  • sorting controls;
  • column-group visibility controls;
  • an Export CSV button.

The exact set of columns depends on the Summary.csv files available in the scenario folders.

Depending on the simulation output, Pool-level metrics can include price, energy, operational, cost, revenue, profit, emissions, and other summary values.

Zonal Data

Zonal Data compares results for individual zones.

After Apollo scans the selected directory, the discovered zones appear beneath the Zonal Data checkbox.

All discovered zones are selected by default.

You can clear individual zones before running the analysis.

Each selected zone produces its own comparison table.

Regional Data

Regional Data compares results for individual regions.

Apollo discovers the available regions during directory scanning.

All discovered regions are selected by default.

You can clear individual regions before analysis.

Each selected region produces its own comparison table.

Fuel Type Data

Fuel Type Data compares summary results grouped by generation technology or fuel type.

Apollo discovers the available fuel types during directory scanning.

All discovered fuel types are selected by default.

You can clear individual fuel types before analysis.

Each selected fuel type produces its own comparison table.

This allows you to compare how different scenarios affect the performance of individual generation technologies.

Portfolio Data

Portfolio Data compares summary results for individual portfolios discovered in the scenario files.

All discovered portfolios are selected by default.

You can clear individual portfolios before analysis.

Each selected portfolio produces a separate comparison table.

Storage Data

Storage Data compares results for individual storage units discovered in the scenario files.

All discovered storage units are selected by default.

You can clear individual storage units before analysis.

Each selected storage unit produces a separate comparison table.

Column Groups

Each analysis table provides a Show/Hide Columns control bar.

The available column groups are:

The column-group controls affect which columns are visible in the table. They do not change the underlying data used for the comparison.

For example, selecting Cost reveals cost, revenue, and profit columns without rerunning the analysis.

Sorting Results

Click a column header to sort the table.

The sort order cycles through:

  1. Ascending
  2. Descending
  3. Unsorted

Sorting applies to the individual result table.

Use sorting to identify scenarios with:

  • the highest or lowest price;
  • the highest or lowest energy result;
  • the highest or lowest operational value;
  • the highest cost;
  • the highest revenue;
  • the highest profit;
  • another available metric.

Scenario Errors

If Apollo cannot load a scenario's Summary.csv, that scenario appears as a red error row in the affected table.

Hover over the scenario name to view the error detail.

The remaining successfully loaded scenarios remain available for comparison.

Analysis Header

The header area above the result tables displays information about the current analysis, including:

  • the selected directory path;
  • the number of scenarios found;
  • the detected currency format.

This information provides context for the comparison tables.


When to Use It

Use Series Summary after you complete multiple iPool simulation runs and want to compare their outputs.

Before using Series Summary, make sure:

  • Apollo is in viewer mode.
  • The simulation results are stored in separate scenario subfolders.
  • The scenario subfolders are located inside a common parent directory.
  • The scenario folders contain their expected Summary.csv output.
  • You know which data types and items you want to compare.

The Series Summary button is available in Apollo's top bar when viewer mode is active.

The feature is not part of the Command Module, Database Editor, or Vantage workspace.

tip

Use Series Summary for completed simulation outputs. Use the normal Dashboard viewers when you need to inspect the detailed time-series behavior of an individual scenario.

Scenario Discovery Limitation

Apollo scans only the first three scenarios in the selected directory when discovering available:

  • Zones
  • Regions
  • Fuel Types
  • Portfolios
  • Storage Units

This controls which items appear in the sub-selection lists.

It does not restrict the number of scenarios that can be analyzed.

For example, if your directory contains:

Scenario_01/
Scenario_02/
Scenario_03/
Scenario_04/
Scenario_05/

Apollo can analyze all five scenarios, but discovery uses the first three scenarios when building the lists of available zones, regions, fuel types, portfolios, and storage units.

If an item exists only in Scenario_04 or Scenario_05, it may not appear in its corresponding selection list.

If this happens:

  1. Move the relevant scenario earlier in the folder order.
  2. Rename the scenario so that it sorts into the first three positions, if appropriate.
  3. Reopen the directory.
  4. Review the updated selection list.

Basic Steps

Open Series Summary

  1. Switch Apollo to viewer mode.
  2. Click Series Summary in the top bar.
  3. Wait for the Series Summary panel to open.

Select the Scenario Directory

  1. Click Browse.
  2. Select the parent directory containing the scenario subfolders.
  3. Review the detected scenarios and directory information.

The selected directory becomes the source location for the Series Summary analysis.

Select Data Types

  1. Review Select Data Types to Compare.
  2. Select Pool Data to compare overall system results.
  3. Select Zonal Data to compare individual zones.
  4. Select Regional Data to compare individual regions.
  5. Select Fuel Type Data to compare generation technologies.
  6. Select Portfolio Data to compare portfolio results.
  7. Select Storage Data to compare storage-unit results.

Pool Data is selected by default.

Select Individual Items

  1. Review the sub-selection list beneath each selected data type.
  2. Clear any zones, regions, fuel types, portfolios, or storage units you do not need.
  3. Keep the items you want to include in the analysis.

All discovered sub-items are selected by default.

Run the Analysis

  1. Click Analyze.
  2. Wait for Apollo to read the available Summary.csv files.
  3. Review the generated tables under Analysis Results.

The Analyze button becomes active when a directory is selected and at least one valid data type and its required sub-items are selected.

Review the Results

  1. Review the scenarios listed in each comparison table.
  2. Click a column header to sort the table.
  3. Click the same header again to reverse the sort order.
  4. Click again to return to the unsorted state.

Show or Hide Columns

  1. Use the Show/Hide Columns controls above each table.
  2. Select Price and Energy to show or hide price and energy metrics.
  3. Select Operation to show or hide operational metrics.
  4. Select Cost to show or hide cost, revenue, and profit metrics.

Export Results

  1. Click Export CSV on the table you want to export.
  2. Open the exported CSV in your preferred spreadsheet or analysis application.

Each table can be exported independently.


Important Fields, Buttons, and Options

Directory Selection

The Browse control opens the folder picker used to select the directory for analysis.

Select the parent directory containing the scenario folders, not an individual Summary.csv file.

The selected directory becomes the source location from which Apollo discovers and reads scenario results.

Data Type Selection

Each data type has its own checkbox.

Selecting a data type can reveal a corresponding sub-selection list after Apollo scans the directory.

For example:

Clear individual items when you want to limit the analysis.

Analyze

The Analyze button executes the comparison.

Apollo processes the available scenario summary files and creates the selected result tables.

The button remains unavailable until the required directory and selections are present.

Column Visibility

The Show/Hide Columns controls affect the visible metrics without affecting the actual comparison.

The default state is:

Price and Energy  → Shown
Operation → Shown
Cost → Hidden

Select Cost when financial metrics are required.

Sorting

Click a column header to sort.

The table cycles through ascending, descending, and unsorted states.

Sorting applies only to the table where the column is selected.

Export CSV

Each analysis table has its own Export CSV button.

The export contains the table data represented by that analysis result.

Example filenames include:

series-summary-Pool.csv
series-summary-Zone_01NLUZ.csv

The exact filename depends on the data type or item represented by the table.


Expected Result

After you click Analyze, Apollo displays one or more comparison tables under Analysis Results.

Each table contains:

  • scenario rows;
  • available summary metrics as columns;
  • column-group visibility controls;
  • sortable column headers;
  • an Export CSV button.

The number of result tables depends on your selected data types and sub-items.

For example, selecting:

  • Pool Data
  • two zones
  • one region
  • three fuel types

produces:

Each table compares the available scenarios independently.

Scenario Information

The header area above the analysis results identifies the selected directory, the number of scenarios found, and the detected currency format.

Scenario Rows

Each successfully loaded scenario appears as a row in the comparison tables.

The row contains the available metrics for that scenario.

The exact metric columns depend on the contents of the scenario's Summary.csv.

Missing or Invalid Scenario Output

If Apollo cannot load a scenario's Summary.csv, the scenario appears as a red error row.

Hover over the scenario name to see the error detail.

Other successfully loaded scenarios remain available for comparison.

Exported Results

Clicking Export CSV downloads the selected table as a CSV file.

The export is separate from the original scenario output files.

The analysis does not modify the scenario results.

File Access

Series Summary reads the scenario Summary.csv files from the selected directory.

The analysis does not modify those files.

The Export CSV action creates the comparison output as a separate browser download.

Example Workflow

A typical directory can contain several completed simulation runs:
